The national-level Christmas celebration will be held in the Portuguese Settlement here on Dec 27.
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said today preparations to spruce up the open area and food court facing the Straits of Melaka for the event were 95 per cent completed.
He told reporters after visiting the site that the Melaka Historical City Council had spent RM1.95 million to beautify and upgrade the settlement and he that it would will boost the tourism industry in the settlement.
The celebration would begin at 8.30pm and would be launched by Prime Minsiter Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi who would be accompanied by his wife, Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah, and Melaka Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob.
He expected a 30,000-strong crowd for the event which would be filled with cultural performances and songs by guest artistes.
